General information:

This county is called « le Pays du BD », cartoon county, due to its world-famous cartoon festival which is held each year in Angoulême. It rather sums up the spirit of the area: fun, young, dynamic and colourful. At the same time, one must not forget the Charente’s rich cultural heritage, both architectural and (it is France, after all) gastronimique. The Charente means beautiful countryside, interesting old towns and simply heaps of places to eat well.

Charente would not be Charente without Cognac...and cognac. Cognac is a town steeped in history, with the Charente river meandering between the huge cognac houses: the cognac used to be transported on barges. Nowadays you can visit these establishments, cruise on the river and (importantly) taste the delicious cognac.

It is a county which has a stong tourist industry, based on the proximity of Cognac, the expansion of the river-cruising industry and its unspoilt countryside.
